Broward County’s geographic setting makes its transportation network increasingly vulnerable to weather-related extremes. Coastal inundation, storm surge, record-breaking rainfall, extreme heat, and rising groundwater levels are already impacting roadways, transit facilities, and supporting infrastructure. In 2023, Fort Lauderdale experienced historic rainfall totals exceeding 100 inches, including more than 26 inches in a single day, underscoring the growing strain on the region’s transportation systems. As these conditions intensify, they pose significant challenges to the safety, reliability, and long-term performance of critical infrastructure.
The Broward MPO’s Infrastructure Hardening Program supports projects that reduce the impacts of these weather stressors on transportation facilities. The program focuses on strengthening the durability and adaptability of the transportation network by addressing key risks related to coastal inundation, flooding from precipitation and storm surge, extreme heat, and future groundwater elevation. Through a proactive approach, the program seeks to protect public health and the environment while ensuring a safer, more secure, and dependable transportation system for residents, businesses, and visitors throughout Broward County.
