Transportation Enhancement activities are a means of creating an improved transportation environment and system, while making a contribution to surrounding communities. This is accomplished through projects such as facilities for pedestrians and bicycles, scenic or historic highway programs, landscaping and scenic beautification, historic preservation, and establishment of transportation museums. Since the inception of the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Enhancement Program in the early 1990’s, the Broward MPO has succeeded in developing widespread awareness of this popular Program on the part of municipalities, interest groups, and the general public.
The funding cycle typically commences each year in mid-March. After the MPO receives formal notification from the State, the MPO announces the beginning of the annual Enhancement Cycle through correspondence to cities and other local public agencies. These local governments and agencies may then apply for funds, and they are encouraged to incorporate ideas from residents, homeowner associations, and other interest groups. The current Enhancement Application Process Schedule indicates the time frames to be followed by each agency in processing this year’s applications.
